Homework in Kindergarten?
Back in my day Kindergarten was a half day program that consisted of finger paints and naps and snacks with chocolate milk.
In Zo Peep’s full day program, she writes in journals, practices penmanship, learns about the properties of wood and paper, studies famous artists (she corrected my pronunciation of Joan Miro recently), reads, practices vocabulary words, and learns arithmetic.
Her homework usually consists of about 8 pages of worksheets in which she needs to identify phonetic sounds, look for patterns, write in missing sounds, add or subtract objects, practice her writing and read a story and then illustrate it.
Here she is doing her homework at the Kitchen table last Tuesday.

And here are some pictures from this morning. She woke up at 6:10 AM and is working on her homework packet as I type this entry.

With homework in Kindergarten, will she be doing Term Papers in 1st grade?

Possibly. My daughter had to do a report on a rainforest animal at the end of first grade, and she had to list her references. The report as I recall was 3 pages long. The reading teacher was a 20-year veteran who got the kids to do amazing things. My kindergartner also gets a packet, in jher case with one worksheet or activity an evening, usually two reading related and one math a week. Last week she had to measure her head and then find things that were smaller than, bigger than, and the same size as her head. Her teacher says that it's to get them ready for homework in first grade.
Just wanted to say hello -- our blogs are so similarly named -- mine is A Hen and Two Chicks!
Your family looks lovely! Good luck with your blog!
I was suprised at the amount of homework for my kindergartner as well! She brings home a folder every Monday, with completed work from the previous week, plus usually 2 or 3 worksheets that need to be done. Also, sight words that we review, with usually 3 or 4 new ones per week. And two booklets to read. And lately one level 1 book to read.
And if I think it's hard to find the time to help with this...it'll be really tough when the twins start school next year!
When my girls started school I was amazed at the amount of things they're doing now compared to when I was in the same grade. My...how things change!
